I am trying to get an SSD drive 2.5" to work instead of the SATA drive fitted.

It says the original one is set for RAID but my new one doesn't even show up in the bios when I plugged it in. It has files on it including a windows 10 operating system out of an old PC.

How do I get the laptop to see if and even better boot from it?

FYI it still has the M2 drive fitted with windows 11 on it.

I really want to get back to Windows 10 as 11 seems seems very slow and eats resources.

Hi @timg1982,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your Pavilion 17-cd1xxx isn’t detecting your 2.5" SSD, and you're trying to boot Windows 10 from a drive that came from another PC. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Make sure the 2.5" SSD is actually connected and powered
The Pavilion 17-cd models support a 2.5" SATA bay, but only if the SATA connector + cable kit is installed.
If the cable or bracket wasn’t originally included, the SSD won’t power on or appear in BIOS.

Check the BIOS for storage configuration
Press Esc → F10 (BIOS setup) → Storage / System Configuration.
The HDD/SSD should appear under “SATA Device” even if it’s not bootable. If it doesn’t appear, the SATA hardware or cable is not detected.

Disable RAID / Switch to AHCI if needed
Some Pavilion 17 systems default the controller to RAID, but 2.5" drives still show up even under RAID mode.
If RAID is enabled, leave it for now — it won’t stop the BIOS from detecting the drive.

Understand why the SSD won’t boot Windows 10 yet
A Windows 10 installation taken from a different PC almost never boots on a new laptop.
Different drivers, boot mode (UEFI vs Legacy), and hardware profiles prevent it from loading.

Check boot order after BIOS detects the SSD
Even if the Windows 10 install is incompatible, the SSD should appear as a boot option.
If the SSD does not appear in the boot list, the system cannot read it at all.

Try the drive on another PC to confirm it works
If the SSD appears on another machine, the issue is with the laptop’s SATA cable or bay.
If it does not appear, the SSD itself may be faulty.

If your goal is to run Windows 10
The cleanest method is to:
– Back up your SSD
– Create a Windows 10 USB installer
– Install Windows 10 fresh onto the 2.5" SSD or the M.2 NVMe
A fresh install will run properly, unlike a transplanted OS from another computer.

You can keep the M.2 drive as storage
If you don’t want Windows 11, you can install Windows 10 onto the SATA SSD while keeping the NVMe installed.
After installation, set the SATA SSD as the first boot device in BIOS.

I hope this helps.
