Your welcome.

Ok, first I will need the product or model number of the PC to see how the drive is placed in your specific model. It is usually quite simple to replace the drive and I will guide you in the various steps. The same goes for the drive itself, I will be able to give you more precise informaton once I know the model.

You are going to need a 2,5" internal drive. The size of HDD or SSD are the same. So a 1TB HDD will store the same amount as a 1TB SSD. The difference is the speed where and SSD is about 10 times faster. If you need a lot of space it will be much cheaper to use a regular HDD. Replacing the drive is the same for SSD or HDD (they are even the same size 2.5").

The more time consuming process will be installing Windows 10 again. If you do not have HP recovery disks you can either buy them or in my opinion the better solution is to get Windows 10 from Microsoft for free by downloading and creating a bootable USB pen. You will need to do this on different computer.

Here is where you get Windows 10 from:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

There is also explanation under heading "Using tool to create installation media".

You need to download the tool and run on PC. Choose the language ; choose 64-bit version and choose Home version. Choose to install on different computer. Choose create USB drive (you will need empty drive of at least 5GB).

This can take a couple of hours and once finished you will have USB with Windows 10 on it which we will use to install on the new drive.

Let me know and please feel free to ask any question,

David

Hi,

This means that your hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced. I can give you more details on how to replace the drive if you provide complete model or product number of the PC.

You can try recovering files by removing the drive from PC and connecting interally to motherboard on a desktop PC via sata cable, or you can get a sata to usb adapter and connect to another PC and see if you can recover your personal files.

You will need to reinstall Windows 10 with either HP recovery disks or by downloading Windows 10 from Microsoft and performing a clean install once you have replaced the hard drive. Windows 10 will automatically activate once installed as long as you install the same version which was already on PC (home or pro).

You could also consider replacing the hard drive with an SSD which would greatly increase everyday performance of the PC.

Let me know if you need further help,

David

Hi David
Thanks for your reply. I will provide you with my product number later today. I am work and don't have the laoptop on me.

May be you can provide me with the details of what replacement hard drive product to purchase.

As for the size of the SDD, what would be equivalent size SDD for a 1T HDD. I know SDD are very expensive, would 250G be comparable to 1T HDD.

Also Is the replacement of the hard drive something I can do myself as a completely non technical person. Is it as simple as opening the laptop and pulling out and clicking in a new hard drive.

Is the replacement of SDD easy enough where the existing hard drive is a HDD?

Thanks again.

Hi David

The model no is HP Pavillion 15-n047cl
Product E9G53UA#ABA
Serial no [edited]

Please advise on a suitable SSD drive. Would the Samsung EVO 850 SATAIII 2.5inch be compatible. Would it need a new casing?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes the Samsung drive will work well. It is considered one of the best prize/performance drives on the market. You will not need to change the casing as it will be inserted ino the bracket of the old drive once removed.

Now replacing the hard drive in your system is a bit more complex than some other models. If you look on pages 67-71 of service manual we can see the various steps to replace the drive. You can click on each step to get more detailed information and I can respond to any questions.

Here are also the videos for the disassembly of the various parts. You can click on the list on the left side for each step and follow video.

Hi David
I tried downloading Windows as you suggested. It allowed my to download Pro slough my previous licence was for Home version. Now there is a message saying please register Windows, although the computer runs fine for now. Does the mean I have a trial or temporary version of Windows?

Is there a way I can get the product key saved down on my BIOS? I can use this to register the windows although I would need to download the Home version - which means uninstalling the Pro and reinstalling Home. Is that correct?

Thanks again.

Hi,

There is no way to downgrade from pro to home. You are going to need to perform a clean install with Home (should be in the USB drive together with Pro version) or get a product key for pro version.

You do not need a product key to install the Home version as the Microsoft servers will recognize your PC and automatically activate it. However if you need product key for other reasons you should be able to find it with small program such as Showkey plus.

https://github.com/Superfly-Inc/ShowKeyPlus/releases

What you ave at the moment is a not activated copy of Windows. After a certai time a "Watermark" will appear in lower left corner of screen indicating that windows is not activated and maybe some Microsoft account syncing will not work. Otherwise all else remains the same as an activated copy.

Hope it helps,

David
