hp 15-ay013nr specs call for ssd sata drive. My unit has a m.2 2280 nvme slot with only one notch which I think means pcle. Is this compatrible?

The specs of your machine is

It has  128 GB M.2 SSD which is M.2 SATA SSD. Please use M.2 SATA, not M.2 SSD. Format 2280 will fit.

I believe a previous owner tried to upgrade.  will a sata nvme

work with a one notch connecdtion?

We only have SATA or NVMe, they are not the same and I mentioned on my previous note: M.2 SATA i the way to go.
