Have you used the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI utility to test the touchpad?
Press the power button and immediately tap the F2 key and then component tests and then mouse/touchpad. Run the test.
If it exists at a firmware level then the issue is likely to be the Windows update. I tend to remove an update when it causes me an issue and then wait until the next big update. Chances are that you are not the only person this has affected.
Consider using an older driver to see if that resolves the issue.
I would provide links for drivers but you have not identified your notebook in any way besides stating it is a pavilion laptop.
Look on the bottom of the notebook for identifying information.
