Hi,
On page 37 of service manual you can see how to remove bottom cover (there are screws under the rubber feet)
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06148960
Max RAM for the notebook is 32GB of DDR4 (2x16GB) even if the service manual mentions 16GB
You can purchase from your preferred brand.
Example of RAM
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/hp-17-by0000na#MEMORYFilters
You should also consider upgrading to a M2 PCIe NVMe SSD which would give a great boost to the machine.
Hope it helps,
David

Hi,
Yes, this will work on your model.
The 17by-0XXX is the series of which your model is part of. The XXX can be replaced by any numbers to give the specific model. Your specific model is the 17-by0000na which I can see from the product code you provided.

hi that is really great. thanks for the info. i am thinking of going with the 32gb ram full max it out. my other question is as follows ..
could i change the intel optane 16gb to a solid state, boot windows off that and keep the hard drive as a storage drive? and what manufacture do you recommend as i see there is many out there from samsung to cruical.
regards

Great. Yes, the RAM I would go with Crucial as I already linked above
https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/hp-17-by0000na#MEMORYFilters
Now, the spec page for your notebook does not talk about Optane memory. Are you sure you have Optane installed?
The spec page could be missing something (it happens). Anyway, yes you can use a M2 PCIe NVMe drive such as the M2 Samsung 970 Evo Plus of your desired capacity (no limit). Before removing the Optane, if present, you should disable it in Intel Rapid Storage app
In the doc linked below at the very bottom of the page, you can see how this is done.
https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c05591811
You also need to create some install media by downloading the media creation tool from Microsoft, running and creating a bootable USB drive with the OS on it. There is an explanation on the Microsoft page on how to create the drive.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
I would remove both drives in the PC and clean install Windows 10, let it completely update (settings > Verify for updates)
Next, install HP support assistant and update all HP drivers and more
https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html
If you get a large enough M2 drive, you could just leave the mechanical out of the PC, or when putting back into the notebook wipe it clean.
Hope it helps,
David

hello David
thanks for all your help and useful links here. i have just upgraded the ram from 4gb to 20gb just for now but will move it to 32gb soon. i had a look inside and yes there is a Optane 16gb drive there on my model. i have seen on amazon a 32gb optane, but i guess this just speeds this up with more cache storage than the 16gb. i believe when i was buying my laptop there was 2 models the same but one had optane and dedicated graphics card that i went for.
i think i will go for the M2 PCIe NVMe drive from samsung and just turn the 1tb sata HDD into a storage for data.
thanks again for all the help on the questions thrown your way there
kind regards
