Hi,
The series supports the following processors
- Intel Quad Core i7-4900MQ 2.80-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.80-GHz; 1600-MHz FSB, 8.0-MB L3 cache, 47 W) part # 723523-001
- Intel Quad Core i7-4800MQ 2.70-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.70-GHz; 1600-MHz FSB, 6.0-MB L3 cache, 47 W) part # 723524-001
- Intel Quad Core i7-4702MQ 2.20-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.20-GHz; 1600-MHz FSB, 6.0-MB L3 cache, 37 W) part # 723521-001
- Intel Dual Core i5-3380M 2.90-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.60-GHz; 1600-MHz FSB; 3.0-MB L3 cache, 35 W) part # 708762-001
- Intel Dual Core i5-3230M 2.60-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.20-GHz; 1600-MHz FSB, 3.0-MB L3 cache, 35 W) part # 711903-001
- Intel Dual Core i3-3130M 2.60-GHz processor (1600-MHz FSB, 3.0-MB L3 cache, 35 W) part # 713163-001
- Intel Dual Core i5-3120M 2.40-GHz processor (1600-MHz FSB, 3.0-MB L3 cache, 35 W) part # 700627-001
Please buy the right part and the following manual shows you (page 78) how to replace CPU.

I7 4940mx is the most powerful processor that could support this type of Socket G3 the problem is that you will have temperature problems and I think it could affect the voltage because for example the alienware 18 has that processor and brings two three coolers 2 for the processor and one For the video to decide all the heat and a charger of 330w 16.9A ~ 19.5V, compared to envy that brings a cooler and a charger of 120w.
I also have this problem and investigate to update my processor I have the envy 15 106la my processor is the i5 4200 I think the best option we have is the i7-4700MQ, i7-4702MQ, i7-4800MQ, i7-4810WQ, i7-4900MQ per temperature topic and I think that you will also have to buy a thermal paste Premium and remove the hard drive and replace it with a ssd so that it does not contribute with the heat that generates a hdd you will have to take the msata that you have the same since that is cache for the hdd and if you put a ssd will be there to spare.
I extended too much but you will understand the reason of everything that I said good luck friend. Bye

hi,
be carefull it's a trap. (i don't understand why hp is doing it) but that pdf has 2 completely diferent sets of motherboards and processors .
--set A) the motherboards with hm77 chipset and the cpus from 3rd generation: i3-3...something or i5-3..something with phisical "socket G2" , can be upgraded to i7-3...something
--set B) the mobo with hm87 chipset and i7-4...somethinng, with phisical "socket G3". the "worst" cpu here, i7-4702mq, is quite powerfull and an upgrade to i7-4900mq will bring a 20%+ and to i7-4940mx (not in the list) a 40%+..
those 2 sets can't be mixed !!!!
also be carefull with the number of W (tdp) for both sets.
