I am having a simular issue.  I have a Hp 2000 notebook pc that came with windows 8 installed. updated to 8.1, all was good, then recieved a free update to windows 10, and at first had some issues but figured out to correct them and everything was great for quite some time.  Last week however my cd/dvd rom stoped detecting blank disc, and blank discs only! every other function is working properly.  reads cd's and dvd's, including burned cd's and dvd's.  Yet, when i try to burn a new audio cd it simply will not detect the cd-r.  I know the discs themselves are perfectly fine, as i took one out of the package(same one my pc would not detect) stuck it in a friends hp laptop and made a cd! no problems! I have spent a week now reading through forums both here and on microsoft trying every plauseable solution. The drive is in listed in device manager, and drivers are up to date.  properties dialog box says device is working properly, but its not.  uninstalled adn re-installed both the disc drive and windows media player, updated all drivers involed. attempted to clean registary per many other answers to simular issues, but the upper and lower filters were not even there! Lastly i ran components test in bios menu on the optical drive, the first 2 test, read and random read both passed, but the read write compare would not even run. technically it did not fail and is listed in test logs as cancelled because both times i tryed it with 2 different writable disc(Verbatim brand digital vinyl cd-r) the stest stoped and said to please insert writeable disc!   Please someone help me with this. Im a bad computer owner and have not regulary created restore points so basicaly if i restore im factory reseting and i dont want to if i can avoid it.
