I have not until now tried to use my DVD player in my laptop. My warranty of course just ran out in June. When I stuck a DVD in today nothing happened. Looked at device manager and it doesn't show there!! I suspect it has never been installed properly as I have never seen it in device manager. And detect new hardware doesn't find it. Came with Windows 10 so no upgrade. What do I do???

Try a bootable disk like a Windows installer or recovery disk and see if the system can boot from it. Select boot order by tapping F9 as you power on. If you can boot from the DVD and it does not show up in Windows we know its a software issue. If the DVD drive is not seen in preboot environment it is hardware.
