As I bought an HP ENVY 13-ad173cl in November 2018, I replaced the battery in 2021, yet when its capacity was almost gone by September 2024 I decided to simply remove it as I am mostly using the laptop at home. Then I noticed that I could not initiate wsl2 and found out that there was no CMOS battery on that model despite Zach Cabading's article FAQ : Do laptops have CMOS batteries?

In modern laptops, the BIOS chip gets its power from the main battery.
I have no idea as to why Zach Cabading is writing about old RTC battery tech as if it were used in HP's current laptops.
You need to replace the battery with a new genuine HP part numbered battery.

It is highly recommended to purchase and install only Genuine HP part numbered batteries. "Compatible" batteries have been known to not always operate as expected
