I have a hp omen 15- dc0xxx. The mechanical HD doesn't work. Everything is on the 256gb ssd which I replaced with a Samsung  m.2 2 tb ssd. There is only one m.2 ssd slot on the laptop. Now I can't use the laptop, there is no operating system. I have Everything on the 256 gb ssd copied onto a micro sd card. How do I get the os to work so I can copy Windows onto the new ssd?

If you want to migrate the Windows OS by cloning the Windows OS from the old SSD without re-installing it, you can use third-party software such as DiskGenius or Hasleo Disk Clone.

How can I download Disk Genius if the os doesn't work with the new m.2 ssd. Should I put the old ssd back in the laptop, download  Disk Genius to a sd card and use a USB card reader to use disk Genius with the new ssd?

HP Recommended

Yes you have to reinstall your old SSD, or if you don't want to reinstall it, you just have to reinstall Windows+Drivers+Software.

The SSD upgrade mechanism must be like that, if you don't want to bother reinstalling the SSD because you haven't cloned the Windows OS, that means you have to bother reinstalling everything.

I'm using Diskgenius to clone my ssd in ntfs to a micro sd card which is exFAT. Should I reformat the sd card to ntfs to do the cloning?

HP Recommended

Wait, MicroSD and SSD (Solid State Drive) are different types of storage devices.

MicroSD cannot install Windows, while SSD can.

If you mean cloning the OS from the old SSD to the new SSD, yes it must be according to DisGenius settings.

However, it is different from cloning the OS from an old SSD to a MicroSD, because it will not work, because the MicroSD cannot run the OS. So, the MicroSD format remains exFAT.
