Hello! I have an hp omen 15 and have been thinking about getting myself an external monitor. The one i had in mind was the asus ROG xg258q. However, this is the first time i am doing this and i had a few questions.
1) Which cables/other stuff should i buy? i tried doing research and saw someone had bought the wrong cable and their external monitor had a refresh rate cap at 60hz. From what i understood, i need a dvi to dvi cable, but i'm not sure if that's the case or if i need any other one.
2) Will this cause a delay on the external monitor? I am using my pc for gaming and i can't really afford to give up fast reactions, so having a delay between the external monitor and the laptop would be problematic.
3) Is this generally recommended? Would this work properly, without causing too many issues to my laptop?
Thank you in advance for your answers! Sorry if some of the questions are stupid i am completely new to this i found out this was a thing 2 days ago. 🙂

The specs of your machine is
https://support.hp.com/ee-en/document/c06060803
Looks line it is very similar to my machine over the Tasman
https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06095817
Yes, it also has NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 (8 GB GDDR5 dedicated) and dual storage.
Your machine has HDMI 2.0 and it supports 4K @60Hz using HDMI 2.0 cable even its internal screen has 1920 x 1080 @144Hz.
I always use external monitor on my HP Omen and only use it may be twice a month (less now because my grand kids can't come to visit me) to edit photos/videos only. I don't have any problem using external mouse and keyboard (Logitech MK700/Mk710 set) and external monitor(s).
Regards.

Hello, thank you for your answer. So if i want to get a framerate as high as possible on the external monitor what cable should i buy? Should i buy HDMI to minidvi, hdmi to hdmi or minidvi to dvi? I am aiming for 144hz on the external monitor. Would that be reachable with any of these cables?

Frame rates and resolutions work different way: frame rate higher resolution must be lower. As mentioned before your machine has HDMI 2.0 port therefore
Make sure that the exact monitor which supports 144Hz display with HDMI 2.0. HDMI 2.0 is also fairly standard and can be used for 240Hz at 1080p, 144Hz at 1440p, and 60Hz at 4K.
Again you must use HDMI 2.0 or above cable.
