HP Pavilion - 15-cs0012na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

Regarding my laptop - hp pavilion Laptop 15-cs0012na, product # 4AX54EA

My 256SSD drive is nearly full.

I read about m.2 NVMe SSD drives - can I install this on my pc? Is there a slot for this? - want to check before I buy the drive or open my laptop?

If so, what spec should I be looking for?  NVMe? PCIe?

Would this item be suitable for example?:-

ORICO NVMe SSD 1TB M.2 with Heatsink, Up to 3100MB/s PCIe Gen3x4 2280 Internal Solid State Drive, SLC Cache 3D NAND

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CG1SC2NV/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A5UF6BZS8RHC0&th=1

All the spec on this does not mean anything to me!

Thanks in advance!

You're very welcome.

Yes, you would need to purchase a USB 3/USB-C to NVMe SSD enclosure so you can clone the existing drive's contents to the new one before you remove the 256 GB SSD.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?cr...

For cloning software:

If you buy a Samsung SSD, you can use the free Samsung magician software to clone the drive.

https://semiconductor.samsung.com/consumer-storage/magician/

If you buy a different brand drive, you can use the 30-day trial Macrium Reflect Home software:

Here is a video for the Macrium software for how to clone the smaller capacity drive to a larger capacity drive:

Hi:

Your notebook's product specs indicate that it comes with a 256 GB NVMe SSD.

HP Pavilion - 15-cs0012na Product Specifications | HP® Support

You can install a larger capacity drive, but not one with a heat sink as there is probably not enough clearance inside the notebook to accommodate a drive with a heat sink.

I recommend this drive as a first choice (it costs more but provides better performance).

Samsung 980 1 TB PCIe 3.0 (up to 3.500 MB/s) NVMe M.2 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-V8V1T0BW)...

And this one as a second choice:

Crucial P3 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen3 NVMe Internal SSD - Up to 3500MB/s - CT1000P3SSD801 (Acronis Edition) :...

Or you can stick with your original choice and not use the heat sink, since it appears from the info on the webpage that you install the heatsink (they call it a cooling vest) on the drive yourself.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the SSD removal and replacement procedure:

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply.

I thought my laptop had a normal 2.5" SATA ssd drive and not a NVMe SSD. - thanks for confirming!

In this case I do not want to remove the current NVMe SSD drive and replace.

What are my options to add extra storage?

1) Add another NVMe SSD m.2 storage 8820? (prefereably, like the 3 options discussed); or

2) Add a new 2.5" SATA ssd drive of 500gb/1tb?

If option 2 is possible, I understand from the manual the following parts are required?:-

(15) Hard drive (SATA, 7.0-mm; does not include hard drive bracket or hard drive cable): 2 TB, 5400-rpm 912487-855 1 TB, 5400-rpm 762990-005 500 GB, 5400-rpm 778186-005 NOTE: Hard drive brackets are available using spare part number L19469-001. The hard drive cable is available using spare part number L23889-001

Would this be a suitable option for the new drive?:-

Thanks!

You're very welcome.

You cannot add another M.2 SSD because there is only one M.2 slot.

Yes, you will have to find and buy the parts to install a 2.5" drive since your PC didn't come with one.

You may find it will be more expensive to do that, than to replace the NVMe SSD, that's assuming you can even find the parts you need.

The BX500 is OK, but the Crucial MX500 would provide better performance.

Thanks - yes it seems that a new M.2 SSD is cheaper.

I was wary of losing my data - seems I have to clone my data using an enclosure? (from old M.2 SSD to new M.2 SSD)

Is that right?  If so, can you recommend some software and a suitable M.2 SSD enclosure?

Thanks!
