I have an hp pavilion dv6000 entertainment pc with windows 10 (32-bit) product no. RP285UA#ABA that I want to upgrade the RAM to 8 Gb. I know how to swap out the cards which is straightforward, but I'm confused about how to determine compatibility when purchasing upgraded RAM since there seems to be so many choices?
QUESTION: What do I look for in upgraded memory cards to know if they are compatible with my laptop?

No, that is useless. 32bit Operating system won't be able to access RAM above 4GB.

8 gigs is not going to work. Max is going to be 4 gigs. And it is DDR2-667 SO-DIMM which is long obsolete. I am going to bring @Paul_Tikkanen in here since I can never keep these models straight but if I recall correctly the dv6700 can take 8 gigs bu the dv6499 and lower is limited to 4 gigs and perhaps even 3. There may be a BIOS update that opens it up a bit. And @banhien is right as well. 32 bit OS will only address maybe 3.25-3.5 gigs of memory.

You are correct @Huffer .
The dv6499 Intel support a max of 2 x 2 GB and that is dependent on having the BIOS update installed that supports 2 x 2 GB of memory.
The dv6500 and above Intel can support 2 x 4 GB of memory but you will not find that in any official documentation.
It is all based on feedback from other forum members.
Unless someone can get compatible DDR2 4 GB chips cheaply in used but tested and working condition, buying new would be throwing good money after bad since a brace of 4 GB DDR2 chips would exceed $90.00 in today's market.
One would really have to be devoted to their dv6500 + to invest that kind of money into it.

I should say, NORMAL Windows 32bit won't be able to address anything above 4GB.

Since the person has installed W10 32 bit, they can easily go back and install W10 64 bit, but since he doesn't have a dv6500, it is a moot point.
Notebooks below the dv6500 model series can only support a max of 2 x 2 GB and of that, only around 3 GB will be seen and used by windows regardless of whether a 32 or 64 bit operating system is installed.

I forgot...you wanted to know about memory, which we did not address.
Two of these should work just fine in your notebook...I used this memory in a HP nc6400 business-class notebook with the same chipset as yours, as long as you have a relatively new BIOS update installed.
