I believe that your notebook has the Mobile Intel HM76 chipset.

Download and run this app (I use the portable version) and if I am correct the best processor you can install would be the i7-3612QM 35W processor.

Free Download HWiNFO Sofware | Installer & Portable for Windows, DOS

HP has removed all of the service manuals and drivers from the support site, so you can read the manual from this 3rd party link.

The latest BIOS update I could find for your notebook on the HP FTP site is F.26.

@Paul_Tikkanen,

We know that the OP's laptop is compatible with 45-watt processors, such as the i7-3740QM, as seen here.

That means that the very best compatible processor would be the i7-3840QM (2.80 GHz up to 3.80 GHz, 4-Cores, 8-Threads).

I did something similar to my HP ProBook 6560b, when I installed the 45-watt TDP i7-2860QM. Paradoxically, this processor runs cooler than the HP-sanctioned top i7-2640M processor (35-watt TDP).

Kind Regards,

the socket is 988B rPGA and the chipset is hm76

OK, so then you can upgrade to any one of the Intel processors listed in chapter 1 of the service manual link I posted or according to what NonSequitur777 posted, the i7-3740QM, which shows that processor does work in the HP g7 notebook model series with the HM76 chipset.

The g7 tested with the i7-3740QM processor has the HP Hewlett-Packard 1842 motherboard baseboard product.

You can check your PC motherboard's baseboard product by:

In the search feature on the Windows taskbar:

Type: System Information

Run the app and look for the Baseboard Product line about 1/3 of the way down on the report.
