Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

About a month ago, I got the "Boot Device Not Found" hard disk (3F0) message. Running system diagnostics said my hard drive was bad, so I replaced it. I was able to reinstall Windows and upgrade to 11, and it worked fine for about 3 weeks. This morning, I am getting the 3F0 message again and diagnostic is returning a message that no hard drive was found.

Any ideas, maybe the cord connecting the hard drive? I rechecked the connections and it seems to all be plugged in fine.

Thank you,

Sara

Hi Banhein,

Thanks for the quick reply. I restored the BIOS defaults. I ran the diagnostic with F2 but am still getting the message of no hard drive installed. The Windows reinstall also won't progress due to no hard drive recognized. The diagnostic says to make sure the cable is plugged in. The zef cable appears to be plugged in and free of damage, dust, etc. Do these go bad, is it worth trying to replace before tracking down another hard drive to try? The drive should be good, it was brand new and working fine since the reinstall a few weeks ago.

Thank you!

Hi, @spikesystm

Sara:

It is possible that either the SATA drive cable or the SATA drive controller on the motherboard is no good.

What I recommend you do since your notebook has an available M.2 slot that supports both NVMe and SATA SSD's would be to install a NVMe SSD in the available M.2 slot which uses a different drive controller.

I recommend the Samsung 980 (not 980 Pro) in a storage capacity that meets your needs and budget.

Another option would be the Western Digital Blue SN 580.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for reaching out! I ordered the Western Digital WD Blue SN580 and it came today. I plugged it in (in place of the existing Intel Optane nvme), and removed the SATA Samsung 870 Evo SSD I had installed in November. I can see the SN850 in BIOS but it won't boot up and it says "no hard drive installed/ check power and data cables" when I try to check it with System Diagnostics.

Any ideas on why it would show in BIOS but not in System Diagnostics?

Thanks again for the advice!

Hi, Sara:

Did you install Windows on the new SSD?

If not, you need to.

You can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall Windows, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store Apps

Since you have to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter your notebook's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Your PC's product number is: 4ND14UA#ABA

Hi Paul,

I actually had the HP cloud recovery tool still from my last fight with this thing, so I gave it a go. One time it made it through to the Windows logo like it was going to work, but then gave me an error message of no hard drive. Now, all I can get to with the USB plugged in is the HP loading screen, which freezes. I will fight with it a bit more and see if I can get past the HP screen again and maybe it will spot the hard drive this time. Any other tweaks I may need to try to get it to see the nvme ssd?

Thanks again!

Hi, Sara:

I didn't know the PC came with an Intel Optane M.2 memory device.

Is there a setting in the BIOS to disable it?

Some PCs have the setting to enable/disable the Intel Optane memory, and if your notebook has that setting, you should disable it.

Hi Paul,

I am not seeing an option in BIOS to disable it. The nvme shows up in BIOS but neither System Diagnostics nor the Revovery tool usb will recognize it. Starting to think I should huck this poor thing lol. Thought about ordering a SATA to USB and trying to use the 870 EVO that way just to get back into it, would I have a better chance of getting the NVMe to read if I could get into Windows and mess with it that way?

Hi, Sara:

You don't have the 2.5" drive connected right now, correct?

You shouldn't try to install Windows on the NVMe SSD with the 2.5" drive connected.

If the cloud recovery tool isn't working, try installing W10 by making a plain W10 USB installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below.
