HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-ec1010nr
Microsoft Windows 11

i have drove myself nuts trying to figure out this over heating issue...i play farming simulator a lot..when running on the battery the laptop handles 35-60fps just fine...when a/c adapter is plugged in, it immediately jumps to 85-95celcius at a pretty constant 60fps and shuts down. my pup chewed the a/c adapter in two shortly after i bought it, but i was able to splice it back together and i'm still using it. i ran systems diagnostics on the battery with good results, but based on the amount of time it lasts, i figured it was getting weak. i then bypassed the battery without experiencing a crash for the longest time, which made me think that my battery was just needing replaced..however, about a week ago..the crashing started again.(with the battery unplugged).. i owned one before this one that experienced a fan failure after a couple of years of constant gaming. i have cleaned the fans on this one religiously and diagnostics come back good, but i was thinking of upgrading to aftermarket. should i do one or the other or replace all three ? (battery, fans, a/c adapter).any help would be appreciated..im just faking my way thru with youtube lol..

@cab869309, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

it sounds like your HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-ec1010nr is experiencing thermal issues specifically when plugged into the AC adapter, which could be due to a combination of hardware degradation and power delivery inconsistencies.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Replace the Damaged AC Adapter

Your spliced AC adapter is a major red flag. A damaged or improperly repaired adapter can:

  • Deliver inconsistent or incorrect voltage
  • Cause overheating of internal components
  • Lead to system instability or shutdowns

Action: Replace it with a genuine HP adapter. You can find compatible parts here: HP Parts Store – AC Adapters

Monitor and Manage Thermals

When plugged in, the system draws more power and boosts CPU/GPU performance, which increases heat output.

Try These:

  • Update BIOS and drivers via HP Support Assistant
  • Use HP Command Center to set thermal profile to “Cool” or “Quiet”
  • Undervolt the CPU using tools like ThrottleStop (advanced users only)

Run HP Diagnostics

Even if fans seem clean, internal sensors or thermal paste may be degraded.

Run full diagnostics:

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
  • Run System Tests > Thermal and Fan Tests

  Additional Tips

  • Use a cooling pad while gaming
  • Elevate the rear of the laptop to improve airflow
  • Limit background apps while gaming

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I will try a new charger..I have tried all of the trouble shooting..all my bios and drivers are up to date..I tried using MSI afterburner to overclock, but no luck there...kind of figured the spliced charger cord was problem #1 lol... I have it elevated but no cooling pad...thank you for your help!

@cab869309, You're very welcome! 😊

It definitely sounds like you're on the right track, replacing that spliced charger is a smart first move. A faulty power supply can cause all sorts of unpredictable behavior, especially under load like gaming.

Here are a couple of final tips to help you get the most out of your setup once you have the new charger:

After You Replace the Charger

  • Test thermals again under load (e.g., while playing Farming Simulator)
  • Use HWMonitor or Core Temp to track CPU/GPU temps
  • If temps still spike, consider reapplying thermal paste or upgrading the internal cooling

Optional but Helpful: Cooling Pad

Even a basic cooling pad can drop temps by 5–10°C. Look for one with:

  • At least two fans
  • Adjustable height
  • USB pass-through

I hope this helps!
