hp probook 6470b
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

i have a hp probook 6470b and i have a few questions

1. what is that slot just above the cd tray?

2. can that slot be used to add some type of drive and if so what type of drive would i look for? i'm thinking some type of ssd drive

3. can that slot be used for adding memory and if so what type of memory would i look for?

i'm looking at adding memory to fix a stuttering issue and or testing out an ssd drive.

also i have a issue that i call a stutter. every now and then the mouse will not keep up with my moving it, and when i type the curse will stop and i either type or backspace for a short time and then it catches up. i went thru all the devices and did updates and that did not help then i went to hp updates for drivers and hp told me after scanning my pc what to download and so far i have done one a day and they are not helping.

i'm not looking to get another probook laptop just to see if that does the same thing as i may just be having some hardware issues, but i ask just in case there is a fix for this. thanks

ok i checked and i have the bios and firmware up to date. and i still have this stuttering issue, so i'm going to get another pc and see if that has the same thing going on. it may be a normal issue now. thanks

ok i found out i can swap out the cd tray for a caddy that will let me install a second drive but that slot above the cd tray looks like a spot for adding devices and not a drive or memory. so i guess those questions i got figured out.

now i'm using hp assistant to see what might be going on with the stuttering issue. i have all the updates from win10 and the hp site. the only thing i have not updated is the bios and firmware yet.  i'm a bit scared to do that fearing if it fails i lose my pc, been there done that before. if i get a backup pc then i will give this a try. if you guys say it is ok to do that and let it do it's thing and nothing will happen i may just try it.

also if i add the cd tray for a ssd drive would it be ok to make that the boot drive or not?

or should i move the hd into the caddy and put in a ssd drive and make that ssd drive the new boot drive?

then leave my old drive as a backup and still add downloads and picture to that drive? thanks

Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

This is an older laptop issued in 2012. That space above the CD slot is an Expresscard slot which is a legacy interface used for adding things like a wireless card and even an external graphics card. It is the equivalent of a pcie slot in a desktop. You do not see that kind of slot any more as devices have become integrated. You definitely want to bring the BIOS up to the latest level.

forgot to ask if i do a bios update and the pc fails to run can i go back by rebooting and use f2 or f1 to reset the pc back?

ok i went into the bios and requested to do an update and my bios date was 4-15-2019. version 1.6.0.0  and the bios update is the same so i must have the latest update. after doing that i lost the finger print device now i have to go and recover that. thanks
