hp spectre x360 15"
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

hi all ,,,,

so as it explained on subject , my hp spectre x360 7th  Fan is boosting while charging the notebook immediatly when plug in the AC , otherwise it's Quiet . is this normal like it's some kind of technology , or what ??

i have noticed that many people have the same situation , some of them consider this as a defect , while the other found it's a technology where all the cores of the CPU is activated when plug the AC which causeing heat which enforce the fan to run on the highest speed .

otherwise , the fan is completly off .

any idea please ???

Hello @fadimq079,

Well, yes. Basically charging the laptop allows the CPU to turbo boost, essentially run at a higher clock speed than normally for heavy tasks and such. However, this only works with mainly two conditions - relatively cool internals and sufficient power.

Also, on AC power, the laptop usually automatically switches itself to higher performance settings so this will also induce more heat.

My suggestion is to have HP Cool Control on, set System Cooling Policy to Passive (only recommended if you're really annoyed by the fan noise), and lower your performance settings when running on AC power.

Let me know if you need any help with the above suggestions although you'll need to provide me with a specific model/product number and the version of Windows you're running. (Please do not post serial numbers on the HP Support Forum)

Information on how to find a laptop's model/product number is detailed in this HP document.

Finding the version of Windows is done by simply typing winver in the search box.

Hope that helps,

Eddy

hi Eddy ...

thank u very much 4 response .

about your suggestion :    you said  set System Cooling Policy to Passive ((only recommended if you're really annoyed by the fan noise)

the fan it self is good and the noise coming from the air coming out by the high speed fan .

actualy i have another hp labtop ( envy x360 4k 15" 6th ) it does'nt behave like my spectre when charging ..

so do u meant that not all hp notebooks supported by this technology ???

another question : if i put SCP to passive as u mentioned , is this safe for the spectre hardware component from overheating ???

plz answer both questions , below is my system info's u asked :

HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl0XX

PN : X5P15AAR

Win 10 pro 64bit ver : 1809 (os build 17763.195)

thank u Eddy ...

So I’m having the exact same issue with my spectre x360 Vega M. I was really annoyed by it and didn’t quite know how to handle the issue so I just did a complete factory refresh of the device, wiping it clean and reinstalling Win10 and all the HP software/drivers. It didn’t fix it. I read in some older forums about HP Cool Control and tried to download it, however, the website said my device was not compatible with it. Also, I can’t change the settings to Passive because I don’t have the option. I looked into it and found that somewhere MS had changed the power settings and that may have been a casualty.

Any thoughts on how to remedy? Thanks.

Same behavior on a late 2018 device.

You can get back the fan policy settings with registry entries. I think the "new" strategy is to use the performance slider in the battery taskbar symbol.

In my case patching back and enabling "passive mode" did not change any behavior of the fan,

as HP fans seem to be controlled independently on the OS.

The command center can only select amonst different cooling profiles.

There are quite a few similar topics here at the moment with no appearent solution yet.

Hi all ,

finally , the problem is solved for me after updating the bios of my system from ver F37 to F39  which is the latest one.

according to an hp technician said , one of the BIOS duties is to manage the cpu fan , so after the update , no high speed fan when charging .

i hope it solve the problem for u all too .

and for hp company i should  say :  a 2000 $ premium notebook MUST BE much stable than THIS , what happend it could damage the internal components somehow.

i liked my spectre so much , but this fan & charging problem it's became common with hp spectre 7th & 8th  as i noticed in many fourms .

Alright well, a BIOS update can be helpful in some situations as shown by how @fadimq079 seems to have solved his issue although it's necessarily the most recommended.

I'm quite intrigued by @ThetaRho's situation as I had assumed that HP had finally listened to the previous, outraged users of the Spectre lineup by revamping the thermals and providing users more fan control (through HP Command Center) but it certainly doesn't seem like it. I have to admit that I'm discouraged from charging my Spectre 13 in study areas due to the outrageous intensity of the fan speed.

You guys could consider undervolting the CPU.

@KaseyO, HP CoolControl should most likely be pre-installed on your device although it is true that it isn't available on all systems. Provide me with a specific model/product number and I'll see if the software is available for your device. (Please do not post serial numbers on the HP Support Forum)

Information on how to find a laptop's model/product number is detailed in this HP document.

Kind regards,

Eddy

Actually, untervolting the CPU does not improve much. I tried down to -100mV without getting stability issues, but the fan controller does its own thing.

And CoolControl is not compatible to the current Spectre series (at least at the 15-df0126ng model). You just have three options in the HP Command Center, the forth silent option is missing.
