@lynne252, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since you've removed the hard drive from your HP Pavilion Laptop 14-dv1000 and are trying to access its data, here's how to check if it's BitLocker encrypted (which is highly likely on Windows 11 systems, especially if the laptop had a Microsoft account signed in or Secure Boot/TPM enabled):

How to Check If the Drive Is BitLocker Encrypted

Connect the hard drive to another Windows computer using a SATA-to-USB adapter or docking station, then:

  1. Open File Explorer – The drive may appear with a lock icon and prompt you to unlock it.
  2. If BitLocker is enabled, you'll get a message like:

"This drive is BitLocker protected. Enter the recovery key to unlock it."

Alternatively:

  1. Press Windows + X → Select Disk Management.
  2. Right-click on the volume (your external drive) → Select Properties → Go to the General or Volumes tab to see if it's "BitLocker Encrypted".

If It Is BitLocker Encrypted

You will need one of the following to access the data:

  • BitLocker Recovery Key
  • Password used to encrypt the drive (if set manually).
  • The original laptop with TPM and Windows login (if the drive was auto-unlocked before failure).

Where to Find the BitLocker Recovery Key

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
