Windows 11 Task Manager shows low cpu frequency 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1235U compared to intel's cpu specifications . Under load using for example cpu-z benchmark the maximum frequency reached is 1,66 GHz and the score of the benchmark is low compared to other benchmarks found on the internet with the same cpu. Even with cinebench R23 the score is considerable lower than average. The laptop was plugged in while doing the benchmarks and power mode was changed from balanced to performance in windows. I also tried to see if there is an option in the laptop's bios to change it
but there isn't. Is it a hardware problem and my laptop should be replaced?

Hi @Gnick11,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you are experiencing low processor frequency on your HP 15.6 Inch Laptop PC, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some possible solutions and troubleshooting steps to help you improve the processor performance.
- Power Settings: Check your laptop's power settings to ensure it is not in a power-saving mode that limits the processor performance. Change the power plan to "High Performance" to allow the processor to run at its full capacity.
- Thermal Throttling: Laptops often reduce processor frequency when they get too hot to prevent damage. Ensure your laptop's cooling system is working correctly and that the vents are not blocked by dust. Consider using a cooling pad to help dissipate heat.
- Background Processes: Check for resource-intensive background processes that may be consuming CPU power. Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and identify any unnecessary applications running. Close or disable them if they are not needed.
- Malware Check: Run a full system scan for malware and viruses. Malicious software can consume CPU resources and slow down your laptop.
- Update Drivers: Ensure all drivers, including the CPU and chipset drivers, are up to date. Manufacturers often release updates that can improve system performance and stability.
- BIOS Update: Check if there's a BIOS update available for your laptop model on the HP support website. Sometimes, BIOS updates can address performance issues.
- Resource-Intensive Applications: Avoid running multiple resource-intensive applications simultaneously. Running applications like video editing software, games, or virtual machines can put a heavy load on the processor.
- Disable Unnecessary Services: Disable unnecessary services that run in the background. You can do this by typing "msconfig" in the Windows search bar, opening the System Configuration tool, and unchecking unnecessary startup services.
- Check for Windows Updates: Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date, as updates can include performance improvements and bug fixes.
- Hardware Limitations: If your laptop's processor is an entry-level or low-powered model, it may not be suitable for demanding tasks. In such cases, upgrading to a more powerful processor might be the only option to improve performance.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
