Hi @rtjl,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your frustration—having ongoing issues with your laptop can be incredibly aggravating. Given the extensive troubleshooting you've already done, let’s delve into a few potential areas that could still be contributing to the overheating and rapid battery drain:
1. Software and Driver Issues
- Driver Updates: Ensure all drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, are up to date. Sometimes, outdated or incompatible drivers can cause performance issues and higher temperatures.
- Background Processes: Check for any background processes or applications that might be consuming excessive CPU or GPU resources. Use Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) to identify and manage these.
2. Power Settings
- Power Plan: Check your power settings. Go to Control Panel > Power Options and make sure you’re using the Balanced or Power Saver plan rather than High Performance.
- Battery Settings: Make sure that battery saver options are enabled and that you aren’t using any high-performance settings unintentionally.
3. Thermal Paste and Cooling System
- Thermal Paste: If the thermal paste was not reapplied correctly or if it’s dried out, it could lead to overheating. Given that the fan and heat sink were replaced, it’s worth checking if the thermal paste was properly reapplied.
- Cooling System Check: Ensure that the cooling system is properly seated and that no air pockets or obstructions are affecting cooling efficiency.
4. BIOS/UEFI Settings
- Update BIOS: Sometimes, BIOS updates can address issues related to power management and thermal control. Check HP’s website for any BIOS updates for your laptop model.
- BIOS Settings: Ensure that the power management settings in the BIOS/UEFI are set to default or optimized settings.
5. Battery Calibration
- Battery Calibration: Sometimes, recalibrating the battery can help. Let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts off, then fully charge it without interruption.
6. Environmental Factors
- Ventilation: Ensure that your laptop is being used on a hard, flat surface to allow proper ventilation. Using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches can block vents and cause overheating.
7. HP Software and Diagnostics
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
