Product: HP 15.6" Laptop - Intel Core i7-1355U - 512 GB SSD - 16 GB DDR4

Windows 11

I was unable to select product+OS in the dropdown but I added the product info above.

I just purchased a new laptop and haven't installed any software but the laptop is consistently running at 55-65C when idle or with light use (browsing, Youtube).

This is at least 10C degrees higher than my older laptop (Asus i5-1135) that I was hoping to replace, which runs at around 40C with more usage (although still light use, document tasks + browsing/YouTube).

The laptop itself also felt a lot warmer than I'm used to compared to the Asus laptop so I'm wondering if this is normal for newer laptops with i7 or do I need to get a replacement, return the laptop, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @JennyJ_,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding normal operating temperatures for the HP 15.6" Laptop with Intel Core i7-1355U!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It is not unusual for newer laptops, especially ones with more powerful processors like the Intel Core i7, to run at slightly higher temperatures compared to older models with less demanding specifications. Here are some points to consider with your HP 15.6" Laptop:

Processor and Performance:

  • The Intel Core i7-1355U is a higher-performance CPU compared to the i5, which can lead to increased heat output, especially given its capabilities and energy demands.

Normal Operating Temperature:

  • The temperature range of 55-65°C during idle or light activities like browsing and video streaming is generally within the normal range for a high-performance laptop. These temperatures ensure the laptop is managing heat appropriately during low workloads.

Cooling Solutions:

  • Ensure that your laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface to allow for proper airflow. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches that might block vents.

Ventilation:

  • Regularly clean the laptop's vents to prevent dust buildup, which can interfere with proper airflow and cooling efficiency.

System Monitoring:

  • You can use tools like HP Support Assistant to monitor your system's health and receive alerts if there are any issues with temperatures.

Software Updates:

  • Keep the BIOS and all laptop drivers updated, as updates can optimize performance and thermal efficiency.

I hope this helps.
