HP Gaming Pavilion - 15-cx0056wm

Hello again HP community!, i have an internal ssd that suddenly keeps disappearing/not functioning(?). its not my boot drive just a separate drive i use for installing games/adding misc media files etc..this past days it keeps disappearing suddenly, i've checked the firmware and its updated, my bios too is updated, operating system is also updated, tried also checking for some disk damage when it was still running (right clicking properties, tools, error checking but nothing found. even on crystal disk info it doesn't show any sign of damage when its still detectable and showing.

upon, checking device manager however i saw these (see attached picture)

tbh, idk which pci device and what those unknown devices are with exclamation points..i'm guessing its connected/culprit as to why my pny sata ssd suddenly goes to disappear?

hope somebody can shed some more insight and help me fix it.

Thank You!. 🙂

Hi @Psilocybin360,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • What is the exact model of your HP laptop or desktop?
  • When the SSD disappears, does it vanish completely from Disk Management as well, or only from File Explorer?

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Device Manager Unknown Devices:
    • Right-click the unknown PCI devices → Properties > Details > Hardware IDs.
    • This will help identify which driver is missing. Often, chipset or storage controller drivers are the culprit.
  2. Update Chipset/Storage Drivers:
  3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:
    • Restart and press Esc → then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run the Storage Test to check for intermittent issues.
  4. Check Power Settings:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced Settings.
    • Under Hard Disk, set “Turn off hard disk after” to Never.
    • This prevents Windows from powering down the drive unexpectedly.

I hope this helps.
