Hi,
The best idea would be just to upgrade the M2 PCIe NVMe SSD to a higher capacity M2 PCIe NVMe SSD of your preferred brand.
Something like the Samsung 970 Evo Plus would be great. There is no limit to capacity. You can then reinstall the OS with USB you should create before replacing drive
It is possible to install a 2.5" SATA3 Drive, however you will need to find and purchase the bracket and cable
bracket part number L19469-001.
cable part number L19172-001
On page 63 of service manual you can see the steps to install the drive.

Shouldn't the cable be there already. The bracket may not be (as in my old asus laptop) but you can find a way around that.
It would be alot cheaper for him to upgrade with a 1 or 2 tb 2.5" sata3 SSD than to get an NVMe drive of the same capacity and endurance.
Best thing you can do is to open up the bottom of your laptop and see. If the cable and bracket for a 2.5" drive is there then all you need to do is buy a drive and put it in. If there isn't the connector and hardware then you will have to calculate the difference between buying a bigger nvme ssd and a 2.5" with the spare parts.

The cable is not there as the PC comes with M2 Drive
So, for the cost of the cable, bracket and Drive it might be cheaper to buy an M2 drive to replace the one in it at the moment and maybe get rid of the old one on ebay.
The speed is what really makes the difference a cheap NVMe drive is about the price of a SATA3 SSD
Hope that helps you,
David
