Welcome to HP Support Community, @Shivam_13

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

1. Check Fn Lock

Some HP keyboards have Fn Lock.
If enabled, the function keys may not respond normally.

Look for a key labeled Fn Lock, FnLk, or a lock icon with “Fn”.

Press Fn + Esc on many HP models to toggle Fn Lock on/off.

2. Use the Correct Key Combination

On most HP laptops:

Fn + F2 = Brightness Down

Fn + F3 = Brightness Up

If the icons are printed directly on the F2/F3 keys without needing Fn, then try pressing F2/F3 alone.

3. Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver

Press Win + X → Device Manager.

Expand Keyboards.

Right-click your keyboard → Update Driver.

If nothing changes:

Right-click → Uninstall device

Restart the laptop (Windows will reinstall it automatically)

4. Install/Update HP Support Software

HP brightness keys often rely on these components:

HP Hotkey Support

HP System Event Utility

HP Support Assistant

To update:

Open HP Support Assistant (or download from HP’s website).

Install all Driver and Component updates, especially under:

Keyboard, Input Devices

System Utilities

5. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings

Some HP models allow control of function key behavior in BIOS.

Restart the laptop.

Press Esc repeatedly → then press F10 for BIOS.

Look for Action Keys Mode or Function Key Behavior.

Make sure it is Enabled.

(If enabled: F2/F3 work without Fn.
If disabled: you must press Fn + F2/F3.)

6. Run Windows Updates

Windows updates can restore broken keyboard behavior.

Press Win + I → Windows Update

Install all pending updates

Restart the laptop

7. Check Power Settings

Sometimes power plans affect screen brightness control.

Go to Control Panel → Power Options

Select Balanced or HP Recommended

Click Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings

Expand Display and ensure brightness is not restricted

8. BIOS Update (If Other Steps Fail)

A corrupted BIOS can break hardware keys.

Open HP Support Assistant

Install any BIOS update under "Firmware"

(Only install BIOS updates when plugged in and battery above 50%.)

If the Keys Still Don’t Work

Then the issue may be hardware-related:

The F2/F3 keys may be physically damaged

The keyboard ribbon cable may be loose

The embedded controller (EC) firmware may be malfunctioning

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
