pretty sure its a software problem, unless the laptop overheated and killed those keys.

Hi @WastingMyTym,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I took a look at the information available for the HP Notebook - 14-df0023cl, and what I'm currently seeing shows BIOS F.80 as the latest HP-released BIOS version for this model, released in 2024. I'm not seeing a newer HP BIOS version beyond that for this platform.

Since your notebook is reporting F.82, could you double-check that you've shared the correct model number? We may be looking at a different platform, or there may be additional details that would help us verify the BIOS history for the system.

As for the keys, if you're fairly certain this started as a software issue, I'd still like to rule out any firmware or hardware-related causes before concluding.

Please try an HP BIOS Recovery

  1. Turn the notebook off.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold Windows + B.
  4. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts.

Then run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Restart the notebook and tap F2 repeatedly at startup.
  2. Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  3. Run the Keyboard Test if available.
  4. Run the System Tests as well.
  5. Let us know if any test reports a failure or if the affected keys fail during testing.

A couple of questions that would help:

  • Which specific keys are not working?
  • Do they fail in the BIOS environment as well, or only once Windows loads?
  • Did the issue start after a Windows update, driver update, or a period of high temperatures?

The results of the BIOS Recovery and Hardware Diagnostics will help us determine whether we're dealing with a software/firmware issue or a keyboard hardware issue. Looking forward to your update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
