When the W, S, and X keys stop working simultaneously, it usually indicates a hardware failure along a single signal line (electrical trace) on the keyboard's internal circuitry. Because these three keys line up in a perfect diagonal row on a QWERTY layout, a break, short, or loose internal connection can knock out the entire column at once.
 
Follow this systematic guide to isolate the problem and determine if you can fix it through Windows 11 or if the laptop needs a hardware repair.
 
1. Separate Hardware from Software:
 
Connecting an external device or testing outside of Windows 11 is the fastest way to find the root cause.
 
  • Test with an External Keyboard: Plug in a temporary USB or Bluetooth keyboard. If the W, S, and X keys work perfectly on the external keyboard, your Windows 11 operating system configuration is completely fine, meaning the laptop's built-in keyboard hardware is likely damaged.
  • Test in the HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI: Shut down the laptop completely. Turn it back on and immediately tap the F2 key repeatedly until the hardware diagnostics menu appears. Select Component Tests, then choose Keyboard. Run the interactive test. If the keys fail to register here outside of Windows, the internal keyboard assembly is physically broken and requires replacement.
 
2. Reset the Keyboard Drivers in Windows 11:
 
If the keys somehow work during the UEFI hardware test but fail inside Windows 11, a corrupted driver or software glitch is likely responsible.
 
  1. Right-click the Start menu icon and choose Device Manager.
  2. Click the arrow next to Keyboards to expand the list.
  3. Right-click your integrated keyboard device name (often listed as Standard PS/2 Keyboard) and select Uninstall device.
  4. Confirm the prompt and restart the laptop. Windows 11 will automatically re-detect the hardware and install a fresh copy of the driver upon reboot.
 
3. Check Windows Accessibility Features:
 
Sometimes built-in Windows 11 accessibility tools accidentally intercept typing inputs.
 
  1. Open Settings (press: Windows Key + I).
  2. Select Accessibility from the left sidebar, then click on Keyboard on the right side.
  3. Ensure that Sticky keys, Filter keys, and Toggle keys are all toggled Off.
 
4. Next Steps for Hardware Failure:
 
If your tests in Step 1 confirmed that the keys are completely dead on a hardware level, you will need to choose a pathway for repair:
 
  • Check Warranty Status: Because this is an advanced HP Victus 16.1-inch gaming laptop, it may still be protected by the manufacturer's warranty. Check your coverage status on the HP Support Portal. If it is active, HP will replace the internal keyboard deck for free.
  • Keyboard Module Replacement: If the warranty has expired, a local computer repair technician can swap out the keyboard module. (On modern HP Victus laptops, the keyboard is integrated into the top case/palm-rest assembly, meaning the whole top panel usually gets replaced).
