@logos1,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

When an HP 15s-fq0xxx laptop only functions while connected to the AC charger, the issue is typically caused by a completely depleted lithium-ion battery (by far the most likely cause), a glitched Windows power driver, or residual static buildup blocking the power controller.

Before purchasing a new battery, please follow these troubleshooting steps to isolate whether this is a software or a physical hardware failure.

Step 1: Perform a Power Hard Reset:

This flushes out static electricity that can trap your motherboard's charging circuit.

  1. Turn off Windows completely and unplug the charging cable.
  2. Disconnect any external USB mice, flash drives, or accessories.
  3. Press and hold the physical Power button for 30 seconds continuously.
  4. Plug the charger back into the laptop, but do not turn it on yet.
  5. Check the LED light near the charging port. If it glows amber, it is trying to charge.
  6. Turn the laptop on to see if it detects the battery.

Step 2: Reset Your Windows Battery Drivers:

Corrupted system files can freeze Windows 10 from communicating with the battery hardware.

  1. Right-click the Start menu button and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Batteries section by double-clicking it.
  3. Right-click Microsoft AC Adapter and select Uninstall device.
  4. Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device.
  5. Restart your laptop normally. Windows 10 will rebuild fresh copies of these drivers upon startup.

Step 3: Run the Built-In Hardware Diagnostics:

HP includes a specialized component tester built into your laptop's firmware that operates independently of Windows.

  1. Shut down the computer completely.
  2. Press the Power button, then immediately start tapping the Esc key repeatedly until a startup menu pops up on the screen.
  3. Press F2 to load the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics utility.
  4. Choose Component Tests, select Power, and run the Battery Test.

Here is the official HP Battery Check procedure link: HP Battery Check: Fix laptop battery not charging | HP® Support.

Evaluating Your Results:

  • If the test passes: Your battery is functional. The issue is a deeper Windows setting or an outdated BIOS version.
  • If the test fails (Weak / Replace / Failure ID): Your battery has indeed reached the end of its physical lifespan.

The HP 15s-fq0xxx series typically uses the HP HT03XL 3-cell battery (HP p/n: L11119-855 or L56424-005).
