Hi, I have an hp x360 spectre I got in 2019:
Device name DESKTOP-EAQN1J7
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30GHz 1.50 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
1TB SSD storage
and I was wondering
1.) why my battery life seems to be only 3 hours 30 at best (even with battery saver on; I believe the advertised battery life for this laptop is somewhere between 10-15 hours). This is my second battery (had to replace first battery as it swelled up, more on this later), but the battery life was similar for both.
2.) why the laptop gets hot (especially the bottom) when I don't open the hp command center app and set the thermal profile to comfort (when set at this setting, the fans are always running at high speed, at least the temperature gets cool. I set it to anything else, the fans run at a very low speed and the bottom of the laptop gets very hot). I can't seem to install HP CoolSense as it seems incompatible with this laptop? Btw, just in case, based on the above, hp command center/fans running seems to have no effect on battery life. When checking task manager, CPU usage seems to be random (between 30% and 70%), I don't think I do any CPU heavy things. I only surf the web, watch videos online, and play light games at most. Still have ample amount of space in storage.
As I mentioned before, I even had to get a battery replaced as it swelled up from the hot temperature (and yes, even with the laptop placed on a flat surface with distance from the surface with the rubber legs) when I didn't know about the hp command center > thermal profile > comfort setting, and recently I had to replace my fans as it didn't spin anymore. I assume either from overuse of the fans, or using fans taking advantage of the 360 capabilities.
If possible, can someone please let me know if 1.) the two points are normal with my type of laptop and/or 2.) if there are any suggestions to improve on these points? Please let me know if you need any more clarification to the prompt.
Thanks for the concern,

Hello @supermario88
You are playing with <Insider Preview> so problems can occur unexpectedly !
(1) To get rid of constant overheating problem I recommend the following:
Set "maximum processor percentage" in Windows to 98% --->>> How to show or hide Minimum and Maximum Processor State in Power Options in Windows 11/10 |
(2) Reboot Windows
(3) Use cooling pad !

Kind regards

Hi @Ub6424,
Thank you for your help.
The insider preview issue has been an issue for a while. By accident I have been put in a dev mode for windows updates, so I can't seem to get out of the program whilst my windows is in an insider preview, and since every upgrade seems to be a preview as opposed to a stable version, I can't seem to find the right place to get out of that mode
I tried setting the maximum processor percentage to 98% and rebooted and it doesn't seem to change. Btw, in case I didn't mention it, the usual temperature of the cores is between 45-60 degrees celsius. Maybe this is normal, and having it be hot on skin (like my lap) is normal?
3.) is any cooler pad ok? Some of these cooler pads don't seem to be in Japan (where I live at the moment). As you probably know my spectre has the vents in front of the computer, would this make a difference to what kind of cooler I should buy? I know that the kootek is not sold here (I could have it sent and wait for two weeks of course)... Do you have any experience using the laptop cooler pads? If so, how much of an impact of temperature does it have?
BTW. As for battery life, is it normal for my model to only last ~3:30 hours without it being plugged in (on battery saver mode)? Also would having the fans on affect it? Would have a laptop cooling pad (plugged into the computer per se) mean also a better battery life?
Thanks,
@supermario88

Hi @Ub6424,
The thing is, I have been meaning to replace the thermal paste, but since I got my fans replaced with a repair shop, they screwed the screws so hard into the back, that I can't unscrew it anymore (tried all the strategies, including taking a hammer and screw to try to get it unstuck, but to no avail).
Before, the repair for the fan, the heatsync had a screw that was stripped, but although the screw has been apparently replaced, I now cannot even get to it now...
The repair shop told me there is no need for concern with the thermal paste (I told them that I wanted to try to reapply it) as they checked it, but I wanted to know for sure and try it out... Is there anything that doesn't involve trying to unscrew the back?
Thanks,
@supermario88

Hello @supermario88
If the wrong tool shape and size is used the screw heads will be damaged. This is dead end. The only thing that helps is a drill.
