HP ENVY 13-aq0011ms Laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I purchased HP ENVY 13-aq0011ms Laptop a month ago.  Recently, I've noticed that when the lid closed and the laptop is plugged in, sometimes the laptop becomes hot and the fan kicks in and runs at a high speed. It doesn't run right after I close the lid. I closed the lid, and quite a while later (like a few hours even), for some reason it becomes hot by itself and the fan kicks in.

I initially thought it is something like when it's charged it becomes hot (I don't think this is normal anyway).

But, occasionally, the laptop becomes hot while the lid is closed and even not plugged. For example, I close the lid and put the laptop in my bag. At the time, the laptop is not hot, the fan is not running. But, then, a couple hours later I find that the laptop in my bag is very hot and the fan is running, apparently drawing the battery.  I'm very concerned that I'm having issues like this with a one-month-old new laptop.

My power setting is "When the lid is closed ==> sleep".

This behavior started a couple of weeks ago.

I searched a forum and found some discussions about fan running while the lid is closed, but they are not the same as my problem. My problem is that the laptop becomes quite hot by itself a while after the lid has been closed, plugged or unplugged, and the fan kicks in.

Hi KrazyToad,

Thank you for your reply. I've updated with the most recent Bios update. As of now, the most recent one was the 2019 September version, and its update description does mention some fan behavior issues with the lid being closed. So hopefully it will fix my problem.

It's been a couple of days since the update and so far the issues with my laptop seem to have disappeared. It's a bit too early to tell, but I hope it stays this way. I'll post a follow-up question if the problem reappears.

Thanks a lot for your help.
