Common problems for Battery
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about: Battery Reports, Hold a charge, Test and Calibrating Battery . Check out this link: Is your notebook plugged in and not charging?
HP Recommended
pavilion 15z-cw100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Charger is plugged in. Orange light is on and laptop said it was charging. The laptop is not charging and the power brick is cold. Was able to run the f2 power diagnostics boot option before the battery died. Everything passed. Not sure what's wrong, the laptop/charger is barely a year old.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Did you try another charger?
  • Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?
  • Do you get any error message on your notebook (Such as Plugged in, not charging, etc.)?
  • Did you check the AC adapter for any damage or loose connection?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello, thank you for responding.

  • This did not happen after an update, it happened after waking from hibernation after not being used for a few days.
  • Unfortunately the only charger i have is the one that the laptop came with
  • It shut down forcefully when the battery got too low to stay on. Apart from that, no. The laptop behaved fine.
  • No errors. It actually said it was charging. The orange LED was on and everything but the actual battery percentage kept creeping down. The power converter was cold instead of being warm.
  • I did check for damage, its fine. I don't move the power cable as it stays put in my room. I tried a different wall outlet as well as disassembling the adapter and cable and reconnecting them. No change.
  • I did a hard reset, tried running the BIOS diagnostics command, nothing helped.

Since my last reply, the charger started working again. I had left my laptop plugged in all night hoping that maybe the charger was only trickle charging and with time could charge my laptop enough to reboot. But since then, i haven't had the problem again. Is there a chip in the power brick that talks with my laptop or something of the sort that could fail? I barely have had this computer for a year, too new to be having these types of issues.
