I noticed my laptop was not charging when plugged in. It says 'plugged in, not charging'.The battery eventually dead and I left it alone for a few hours dead. I plugged it in after that and it started charging again after that, so I charged it up all the way and I thought all was good, until I unplugged it and the battery began to discharge. After that it went back to the 'plugged in, not charging' status.

Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Sometimes a simple restart can resolve minor issues with charging.
Check the power adapter and cable: Ensure that the power adapter and charging cable are not damaged or loose.
Inspect the charging port: Look for any dust or debris in the charging port that could prevent a proper connection.
Check battery:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Batteries section.
- Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop. This will reinstall the driver.
Update Battery Driver:
- Open Device Manager and expand Batteries.
- Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts to search for updates.
Reset the Battery:
- Power off your laptop.
- Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if possible).
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reinsert the battery, plug in the charger, and try charging again.
Power Settings Adjustment:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
- Select Change plan settings next to your active plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Look for Battery and adjust the settings to prevent the laptop from disabling charging.
Test with a different charger: If you have access to another compatible charger, try using it to see if the issue persists.
Update BIOS:
- Visit the HP support website for your laptop model.
- Download and install the latest BIOS update, as outdated BIOS can cause charging issues.
Battery Calibration: Let your laptop battery discharge completely and then charge it fully without interruption to recalibrate it.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
