I found this once before and now I cannot seem to find the right source of information - can someone please point me to the max RAM capacity of this computer? I'm thinking it was 32 (comes with 12) but can't seem to find where to verify that now.

You won't find a HP manual that provides that info.
According to the manual HP has on the model series' support page it indicates that the memory is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded, and there is no procedure in chapter 5 to remove or replace the memory.

We know that can't be right since the specs indicate the notebook comes with an 8 GB memory chip and a 4 GB memory chip and it does not indicate the memory is onboard (which would mean soldered to the motherboard).

The Crucial memory report indicates that 2 x 16 GB is the max.

You can do this to see how much memory your notebook can support:
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. After the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
