Hi, I'm using an HP laptop Windows 11. The built in keyboard is not working properly, as soon I use it the modifier keys "SHIFT, ALT, CRTL and WINDOW" is triggering as well without pressing them. And in order to use the keyboard again, I needed to press the modifier keys as I mentioned so it will un-select. But now I'm using external keyboard and works well. I hope someone can help. THANK YOU!

Hi @Nyo-nyo

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue so clearly—it must be incredibly frustrating to have your built-in keyboard misfire like that, especially with modifier keys behaving erratically. Since your external keyboard works fine, this points to a hardware or driver issue specific to the internal keyboard.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and hopefully resolve it:

1. Clean the Keyboard Surface

Sometimes physical debris or moisture can cause keys to stick or misregister.

  • Gently clean the keyboard with a soft cloth.
  • Use compressed air to clear dust from under the keys.

2. Reset Keyboard Drivers

Refreshing the driver can help eliminate software glitches:

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Keyboards → Right-click your built-in keyboard → Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This checks for stuck keys or hardware faults:

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to enter diagnostics.
  • Select Component Tests → Input Devices → Keyboard Test.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to test each key.

4. Check Sticky Keys and Accessibility Settings

Modifier key behavior can be affected by accessibility features:

  • Go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
  • Turn off:
    • Sticky Keys
    • Filter Keys
    • Toggle Keys

5. Update BIOS and System Drivers

HP may have released fixes for keyboard-related issues:

6. Test in Safe Mode

Booting into Safe Mode can help isolate software conflicts:

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Under Boot, check Safe boot → Minimal.
  • Restart and test the keyboard.

If the issue persists even after these steps, it may be a sign of internal keyboard hardware failure. Since your external keyboard works perfectly, you can continue using it while considering a service option for the built-in keyboard.

Let me know what you find during diagnostics—I’ll help interpret the results or guide you further.
