I was working on my laptop and suddenly hear a loud popping sound. I thought something happened and looked around my laptop back is popped open but luckily no fire. My laptop is still working but just think it is quite scary that the back of the laptop could just pop open like this... when the screws were on it...
anyone know what's going on.... seem rather dangerous to me. I have Sony, Asus, Toshiba, Fujitsu laptop in the past but it is first time I have this issue. HP...
my laptop battery is still ok. so why does it explode like such?

@ohmyhero Would you clarify please? The battery is still OK meaning its working but expanded?
If you look inside the case, is battery puffed up and causing the case to split apart like that?
Also, always post the full model or product number so we know exactly what you have.
Its usually in tiny letters on the back or on a label. Or you can run the HP Support Assistant to find it.

I immediately unplugged the laptop worried about danger. but the laptop still working ok as we speak.
I attached another pic of the situation. It could be that the battery expanded to cause the loud explosive like popping sound. Currently, the laptop is working but I am not sure how long.
the product number is: N5S04UA

OK thanks. Your model number is HP Spectre x360 - 13-4193dx. They were released back in 2015, so there wont be any warranty available.
I assume the case wont close as if something is blocking it. If so, that would be the battery which would have expanded.
Those type of batteries are very well known for doing this once they get old.
You will need to replace that battery. HP does not sell them so you would have to look for a third party alternative.
Part number 789116-005
The manual... http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04807803
Note that you don't have to replace the battery if you cannot at the moment. But you still need to remove the old one. You can still run the laptop on the AC cord with no problem.

Well, you need to be able to close the case back up, right?
And yes it could damage the laptop if it busts open and leaks acid.
I cannot speak for what another model will do. But these type of batteries are known for this in any brand laptop.
