Solved!

my hard drive has failed

HP Recommended
15-ay039wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop fell and when i tried to boot it up after, the hard drive basically failed. I want to go ahead and replace it with a SSD but which ones are compatible? I saw one with SATA III and wanted to know if that could work and what are the other types of SSD i can use.

Hi:

You can only install a 2.5" SATA SSD in your model to replace the failed hard drive.

Below is the link to the Crucial memory/SSD report for your notebook.

https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/hp-15-ay039wm

The MX models provide better read/writes speeds than the BX models do.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the drive removal and replacement procedure.

You may be able to use the cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive to reinstall Windows 10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the SSD.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility...

Thank you, Paul. You've been very helpful. The drive is also cheaper than the one i was going to buy. I hope this will keep my laptop running for years to come.
