Hi @LINDA410,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your observation about the wobbly charging lead is very important; it could absolutely be the culprit. Here’s what’s happening and what you can do:

Why This Happens

  • If the DC jack (charging port) or the charger plug is loose, the battery may not be charging properly even though the laptop shows “plugged in.”
  • The system then assumes the battery is bad because it’s stuck at 0%, even if the battery is new.

Steps to Diagnose

  1. Check the Charger
    • Inspect the plug for bent pins or damage.
    • Try another HP-compatible charger if possible.

  2. Check the DC Jack
    • If the port feels loose or wiggles, the internal jack may be damaged or detached from the motherboard.
    • This requires professional repair.

  3. Battery Health Check
    • In Windows, run:
    • powercfg /batteryreport

This will show battery status and cycles.

  1. BIOS Battery Test
    • Restart → Press F2 → Run Battery Test in HP Diagnostics.

Quick Fix Attempts

  • Remove the battery and charger, hold the power button for 15 seconds (hard reset).
  • Reconnect and try charging again.
  • If the battery still shows 0% and “Replace battery”, but diagnostics say it’s healthy, the charging circuit is likely the issue.
