HP Notebook - 14-cf1015cl

MY HP-14 laptop is 3 1/2 years old, and it has served me well as a everyday home machine.   recently the battery died.  a new one is about $30.  While I'm at it, I'm considering adding another stick of memory, and upgrading the SSD from 256 MB to 1 TB.  All this would run me about $200.   Is it worth putting the money into a 3.5 year old machine, or should I start looking around for a new machine, since BlackFriday deals are coming up?

No.

If you base the decision on whether the upgrade is more than 50% of the current value as I do, the answer is no.

I would consider sourcing a new or certified refurbished machine at this point of the notebook's service life.

I was looking at the HP ZBook notebooks a few days ago on eBay.  That is the top of the line when it comes to Enterprise class laptops. When  they are new, the price point is from $1100- $3000.00+.

You can buy  a certified refurbished one  a few generations back (G6-G8) from the current model in the neighborhood of $500.00.
