@Bernard78, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If the alphabetical keys on your laptop are non-responsive after changing the battery, you can follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Update Keyboard Drivers:

  • Go to the Device Manager:
    • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  • Locate Keyboards, right-click your keyboard device, and choose Update Driver.

Reinstall Keyboard Drivers:

  • In Device Manager, right-click the keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the keyboard drivers.

Test Keyboard in BIOS:

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup.
  • Test the keys within the BIOS setup to see if they respond.

Check for keyboard layout issues:

  • Ensure the correct keyboard layout is selected in Windows:
    • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language > Keyboard.
  • Add or select your preferred language and keyboard layout.

Use an external keyboard.

  • Connect an external USB keyboard to see if the issue lies within the laptop's built-in keyboard.

Perform a hardware diagnostics test:

  • Use HP's built-in hardware diagnostics to check for keyboard faults:
    • Reboot the laptop and press Esc repeatedly to enter the HP Startup Menu.
    • Select System Diagnostics and run the keyboard test.
