hp 15-cd3073cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have the hp 15-cd3073cl from Costco.

I want to upgrade the hard drive - I should use the word "replace" with nvme.  Is it possible?  I have no issues reinstalluing Windows as it would also remove the hp bloatware.  Also it may extend the battery life as there will be no spinning disk.  Please help me and let me know if the original slot with the spinning disk need to be occupied ?

Hi:

I cannot find any information on the model number you posted.

Even if I do a general google search, I get zero results.

Please post the product number of your notebook.

Use this guide to find that information...do not post the serial number.

Hello  This is a what Costco Website shows it as:

HP Pavilion 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - 10th Gen Intel Core i7 - GeForce MX250 - Fog Blue

The model number it states on the sales ticket is :  HP 15-cs3073cl    This has a 1TB spinning disk in it and I want to put a nvme drive (1 TB) and remove the spinning disk.  Is that possible ?

Hi:

OK, I found the support page for the base model 15-cs3000 series, of which yours is a member.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-15-cs3000-laptop-pc-series/29133460/manuals

Unfortunately, the service manual only covers the notebooks from the previous model series up to the 15-cs2999.

Since NVMe M.2 SSD's were supported in the older model series, I have no reason to believe that they would not be supported in your notebook's model series since the service manual has been linked to the 15-cs3000 support site.

Chapter 1, page 3 of the manual shows that M.2 NVMe SSD's are supported.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06248419

The NVMe M.2 SSD's listed in the service manual were just what HP offered in the model series.

If you want to go with a 1 TB NVMe drive, that should work just fine.

You should be able to use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the new drive if you want, or you can clean install W10 by making bootable installation media using the media creation tool.

Here is an info link for how to use the HP cloud recovery tool.

You can see if your PC is supported by the cloud recovery tool at the link below...

I truly appreciate your quick response.

The key question is - after the OS has been installed and is working  in the nVme drive - whether I can remove the spinning disk completely?  Will the computer work or will it complain that it needs the old hard disk to be installed and running ?

You're very welcome.

If it were me, I would remove the 2.5" drive during the same time you install the NVMe drive.

Here is the issue with the notebooks that come with a 2.5" drive only...the operating system is on that drive naturally, and when you add a NVMe SSD, the PC still wants to boot from the primary drive which is the 2.5" one.

Many times you have to remove the OS from the 2.5" drive so the PC boots from the NVMe drive.

Since you have no intention of retaining the mechanical hard drive, I would remove it before attempting to install W10 on the NVMe SSD.
