Linux

Hello!  I am a proud owner of this 10yr old laptop and want to upgrade the CPU.

I already put the Max amount of RAM 4GB, cleaned it up, replaced the Thermal paste and it works like a charm with Linux on it after removing XP.

I just want to be sure of getting the right CPU upon ordering, and don't totally understand how to be SURE! which one will work.  Done a lot of research but still a little unsure, so any help would be great.  I know an SSD would do wonders for it but want to see how much a better CPU will help.  From what I see a CPU will be much cheaper also.  Some pc's I've worked on show the CPU Maxing out as with this one sometimes, so it would make sense to have one a little better just for kicks.  One thing I am concerned about is getting one with a higher Model Number that don't perform any better.  I have looked at many cpu's in general and always see older lower spec cpu's that are better/faster than newer ones lol?

With the cpu's I'm looking at, the Highest Model Number I see that might work is the T7600, mine is the Intel Core Duo T5500 (1.66-GHz) processor.  They both have basically the same Specs at the Intel Site and I will leave the link.  But at cpubenchmark.net, it looks like the Sockets might be a little different.  Can someone shed some light as to how I can be Positive that I order the right one?  Here are some links to make it easier.

Again, mine is the:

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5500
(2M Cache, 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)

Would like to go with whatever would be the best Upgrade.  I will provide a bunch of info, hope it's not to much.

The one I'm looking at:

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7600

(4M Cache, 2.33 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)

6. Also, is it important that the MHz is the same:  "667-MHz-FSB"

This is all very interesting stuff to me, thanks in advance, pcpunk

Yes the T7600 will work but I would get it by the HP Part number:

Core Duo T7600 (2.33-GHz) processor   439225-001

This is a Socket M processor and they are quite abundant on eBay at about $25.

Thet are all shipping from Hong Kong or China I am afraid:

Hi,

Sorry for jumping in. nx7400 is a good machine that why bought the nx8220 later. I loved them that why I'm here. I remember at that time I bought them for around A$4,000 each. My daughter left the nx7400 at the museum of the Yokohama Commercial School in Japan. I don't know they still keep it or not.

Regards.

Wow that was fast! thanks very much.  I see the HP Part number now.  I thought it was Socket P and was looking at another one on Ebay so glad I asked.

This one.

1. Is there any other Performance issues I should consider? like Heat etc.

I have a 7200RPM HDD, but not sure if this pc is taking advantage of it?  And, it might need a new one soon, should I bother with the 7200RPM again, does it matter?

Okay, very happy with HP Support, and see that you have a lot of experience!

Thanks, pcpunk

That era of the HP Business Notebooks is the "golden age" I think. Also liked the 6910p.

Uses PATA hard drives, right? You definitely want the 7200 rpm then. Those are getting really hard to find, by the way. Enjoy.

ummm....no mate

this old ass post from 2008 by "huffer".

This person dead wrong.

Also guessing is for amaters

these NX7400's have sata based HDD's

should of googled what you where looking at mate.

Given how old, this post is I doubt you'll ever repond let alot the OP.

the NX7400 can handle any drives up to 160GB (only HDD's supported).

there is no support for SSD's other than Hp's own SSD branded variants if you can find any gen 2 sata SSD drives anyway under 100GB.

The NX 7400 uses 5400rpm HDD's its just not worth upgrading to 7200rpm as the diffence is not as noticable.

But since this is a old thread from 2008.
I'll keep my post as a reminder to new guys and new DIY laptop refurb people.

For those wondering why im bothering updating a old thread I want to put the record striaght (as missinfomation is dangerous).

When or IF you upgrade your ram for these  Nx7400 bissiness retro machines go for anything 677MHz (or PC2 1600) and has hynix ram made ram chips

this NX7400 is fussy on what it can take you can only go up to 4GB or (2x2GB) DDR2 (PC2) Ram

You can install windows 10.

But be aware you will have to manually download and install drivers for windows 10 on your HP NX7400.

I got windows XP, windows 2000, windows vista, windows 7, windows 8 , windows 10 and linux mint working on this machine

Install the Bios "F.0E" to fix some annoying bugs before installing the full 4GB and support a T7600 or T7400

get very good thermal grease if you get these two the "housefire meme" ((60-89C)) is no joke with these two and it eats power like no tomorrow.(typical intel **bleep** of the time)

But i'm sure your'll find a way around that 😉

I know Core 2 Duo's are becoming a collectors item now.

Good luck retro fans.

Go go retro bissiness laptop 's F.T.W.
