Unless the PC came with a 2.5" drive from the factory (which yours did not), none of the parts are there to add a 2.5" drive.

You will have to find and buy the parts needed to do that which can be found in chapter 3, page 23 of the service manual:

HP Laptop PC 17-by4000 - Setup and User Guides | HP® Support

Hard drive cover    HP part # L22534-001

Hard drive cable    HP part # L22526-001

I'd look on eBay because on the HP parts store both parts are over $50 each.

Dear Paul, I thought I was going crazy, because it has a hard drive in it, but it must be connected

to the motherboard.  I have said all of that to say "THANK YOU" so very much, and especially

the references, user guides and references for this problem.  Again, Many Thanks to you.

You're very welcome.

Yes, your notebook has one of those 512 GB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD's which are much faster than SATA SSD's are.

It is roughly the size of a stick of chewing gum.

It fits in a M.2 slot on the motherboard and looks like the one on the Amazon link below:

this the bracket I need for my 2.5 sata hard drive, and what does the ribbon cable connect to on the motherboard?

Yes, that looks like the one.

Seems the same as in this eBay listing.

L22534-001 HP HDD Bumper Caddy 17-By0053Od "GRADE A" | eBay

As to where the SATA HDD cable connects to...

Here is an eBay listing of the motherboard that your PC comes with:

For Hp 17T-BY 17-BY Motherboard 6050A3216501 M12540-601 I5-1135G7 CPU On-Board | eBay

If you zoom in on the picture on the lower left corner there 4 connectors--3 facing to the left and one larger one facing toward the bottom of the picture.

The connector just above that largest one is labeled HDD in white lettering on the motherboard and that is where the cable connects to.

I don't like messing with those kind of connectors, so hopefully you know how it connects.

You're very welcome.

Chapter 6 of the service manual has the instructions to remove and replace the hard drive.

Good luck with your project.
