Everything Huffer said was correct. You are probably limited to Sandy Bridge (2nd Generation Core) Mobile processors.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Bridge
Before you do anything, download the latest BIOS and install it. This will allow for the complete set of supported processors. Your PC might already have it, but you won't break anything if you try to install it again.
That said, you might be able to use a faster processor than the one Huffer advised, but there is no definitive answer. It's likely that HP added support for all i5 Sandy Bridge Mobile processors, but maybe they chose a subset. You could probably -- I repeat, probably -- also use a 2540M because it's a year older than the 2450M, but it's only a touch faster than the 2450M. The i7 processors are significantly faster, but it's possible HP did not support them, not to mention that i7 users are often gamers who abuse their systems.

Remove the old one and stick this one in there:
Intel Core i5-2450M processor (2.5 GHz, SC turbo up to 3.1 GHz, 3 MB L3 cache), Dual 35 W
This is the only guaranteed supported upgrade.
See pages 70-75 of the Manual.
Lots on eBay around $20:
Post back with any more questions and please accept as solution if this is the info you needed.
