Good evening to the whole community. My battery drops from 100% to 94% in one second
; can anyone tell me if I need to take it in for service? I’m posting a photo to better illustrate the issue. Thanks.

Hello @srv76, Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP 15S-fq5083nl.
We appreciate the opportunity to assist you and are glad we could help work toward a resolution. We hope our support has been valuable.
The behavior you describe (dropping quickly from 100% to mid‑90s) is often related to charging / reporting logic rather than a true loss of charge. From the available information, here’s what you can do:
1. Update BIOS (battery reporting fixes)
HP has documented issues where some 14/15/15.6‑inch HP laptops report battery charge incorrectly (for example, stuck at 99%). The fix is a BIOS update via a SoftPaq.
- Go to the HP drivers page:
- Open a browser and go to http://www.hp.com/drivers. - Enter your product (HP 15s‑fq5083nl) and select your OS.
- Download and install the latest BIOS update listed for your model.
- Restart the notebook after the update completes.
A newer BIOS often improves how the system measures and reports battery percentage.
2. Use HP Battery Health Tools (if available)
If your HP 15s‑fq5083nl supports HP’s battery tools, use them to test and optimize the battery:
A. Check/Adjust Battery Health Manager (if present in BIOS)
- Turn off the notebook and connect the power adapter.
- Turn it on and repeatedly press Esc until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F10 to open BIOS Setup.
- Go to Advanced > Power Management Options.
- Look for “Battery Health Manager”: - If present, choose:
- Maximize my battery health if you mostly use the laptop plugged in, or
- Let HP manage my battery charging for mixed use.
- Save changes and exit.
If you do not see Battery Health Manager, updating the BIOS (step 1) is recommended.
B. Test the Battery with HP Support Assistant (Windows)
- In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant.
- If it’s not installed, download it from HP’s site. - In HP Support Assistant, click Battery.
- Click Run battery check and wait for the test to complete.
- Review the result: - Passed: Battery is functioning as expected; the quick drop is likely normal calibration / reporting behavior. - Weak / Very Weak: Battery capacity has decreased; consider replacement if runtime is too short. - Replace / Failure with ID: The battery needs replacement; contact HP support if still under warranty.
3. Battery Care Tips (to slow further degradation)
To keep the battery as stable as possible:
- Avoid prolonged high heat (for example, inside a hot car).
- If storing the laptop for weeks/months:
- Charge to about 80–90%.
- Put the notebook into ship/storage mode as described in your user guide.
- Recheck charge every ~3 months and recharge to 80–90% if it falls below 50%.
- Periodically run HP Battery Check and calibrate the battery (typically every 2–3 months; monthly if it’s rarely fully discharged).
Have a great day!

Hi Meghana_10, thanks for the reply. HP Support Assistant says the battery status is normal. The BIOS is up to date, and the "Power Management Options" and "Battery Health Manager" settings are missing from the BIOS setup. I’m not sure if my PC’s behavior is normal or if I should take it in for service. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you for the update. @srv76
It's good to hear that HP Support Assistant reports the battery status as Normal and that your BIOS is up to date. The absence of Power Management Options or Battery Health Manager settings in the BIOS can be normal for certain HP notebook models, as these options are not available on all platforms.
As a next step, we recommend performing a battery calibration to help ensure the battery charge level reported by the system accurately reflects the battery's actual capacity.
Battery Calibration Steps
- Charge the notebook battery to 100% while the computer is powered on.
- Once fully charged, leave the AC adapter connected for an additional 2 hours.
- Use basic applications such as Word, Excel or any such applications.
- Disconnect the AC adapter and use the notebook normally until the battery level drops below 5% or the system automatically enters hibernation.
- Leave the notebook powered off for approximately 5 hours or longer.
- Reconnect the AC adapter and charge the battery uninterrupted to 100%.
After calibration is complete, restart the notebook and monitor the battery behavior for several charge and discharge cycles (minimum 3 times).
Have a great day!
