I would like to make my G56-129WM laptop a bit snappier.

 

I though of maxing up the ram and swapping the HDD for a SSD.

For RAM: You can upgrade to 8GB (2 x 4GB) of RAM. Your machine uses Intel processor therefore it supports DDR2 RAM. DDR2 RAM are very expensive now as shown ($241 for 8GB):

 

        http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/hp-g56-129wm

 

SSD: You can also use the above link for RAM to buy SSD from Crucial up to 2TB. My suggestion use 512GB or 1TB for easy to manage.
