I've opened the case and tested and the battery is dead. the two batteries are exactly the same size and shape.
also, do I need to get an HP version? or can I use OEM? it seems these things have some intelligence and I'm thinking HP probably load public keys into the battery

OEM means original HP product. This is the laptop battery you need:
(17) Battery (3-cell, 52 Wh) L08855-855
Genuine HP:
Compatible 3rd party:
You can use either battery. Genuine is preferred but I have successfully used compatible batteries purchased from high feedback sellers with very few problems. Good luck.
