The optical drive is 9.5 mm thick so you need a 9.5 mm optical drive caddy for 2.5 inch hard drives like this one:

https://www.jacobsparts.com/items/HDDBAY-02/

Replacing the optical drive is a customer-authorized procedure and is very very easy. See page 41 of the Manual here:

Manual

Remove one screw...slide the DVD drive out...you may need to put the little piece on the back of the old dvd drive that has the mounting screwhole onto the dvd caddy for the hard drive but that is just 2 more little screws and a little piece to transplant over. Put the 2.5 inch HDD in the rectangular opening in the caddy and bolt it in. Slide it in where you took out the DVD drive and secure it in place with the single screw.

But you say you understand you should put the hard drive in the optical drive caddy and the SSD in the laptop. This will require reinstalling Windows onto the SSD of course. The hardware already in the laptop that holds the HDD will also hold the SSD so you don't need any more hardware other than the optical caddy I linked above.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand you want to replace the disk reader with an ssd to upgrade the storage,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you check your HP service and maintenance guide for upgrade information?

If you haven't, here's what you need to check: Click here for details.

And here's the list of parts tested and approved by HP:

Supports 6.35-cm (2.5-in) SATA hard drives in 9.5 mm (.37 in) and 7.0 mm (.28 in) thicknesses

7 mm/9.5 mm share the same bracket

Accelerometer / HDD protection support

Single HDD configuration:

● 2-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-mm

● 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-mm

● 750-GB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-mm

● 500-GB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-mm or 7.0-mm

Hybrid HDD configuration:

● 1-TB, 5400-rpm, 9.5-mm SSHD w/8GB NAND

● 500-GB, 5400-rpm, 7.0-mm SSHD w/8GB NAND M.2 SATA-3 (NGFF):

● SSD, 256GB, 2280, M.2, SATA-3, TLC

Replacing with the optical drive isn't recommended by HP, however, if you wish to do it, you may do so at your own discretion, I personally recommend consulting a local tech before taking it out.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

The one on the top is closer....where did you find those? The one on the bottom has not been in use for about 10 years.

Its a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive. This is what it looks like:
