So looks like my hard drive is about to fail 😞 I have run a system diagnostic and an advanced one, both have said the hard drive is failing. ( imminent failure ) I have backed up the laptop on an external hard drive and to drop box, and created an image backup as well as a windows 10 drivers restore on a USB. Before I open the laptop up how do I know what SSD I need as they seem to come in 2 shapes. I store and use a lot of images so I think I need a 1TB but I can't find the manual that shows you through the steps. Help and advise welcome.

(As a note i have already set up a back up laptop just incase i loose this one, but the local disk drive is already nearly full so would still need a larger SSD going forward. )

You're very welcome.

It's a M.2 SATA SSD.

There's no need to buy a new PC in order to run W11.

If you are happy with your PC, and if you are interested in doing an in-place upgrade from W10 > W11 24H2 on your PC as is, watch this video, which is the easiest way to do it in my opinion, and I have tried many different ways to do this during the last 3 years.

How to Install Windows 11 on Unsupported PC in 2025 (New Easiest Method, No CMD)

Download the W24H2 ISO file and use that (3rd option).

Download Windows 11

You can download the free 7-Zip file utility from the link below. The top line is for 64 bit.

You'll have to repeat this procedure each October when Microsoft rolls out the new builds because a PC that does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements will never automatically get the update to the next build.

Other than that, your PC will continue to get the monthly cumulative and other updates.

That's only a minor inconvenience to have continued OS support beyond October of 2025.

If the PC does not work as well on W11 as it did on W10, you have 10 days to easily go back to W10 as long as you don't delete the W11 upgrade files or the Windows.old folder.

See option 1 at the link below for how to go back to W10:

How to Downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10

You can also do that for your other PC as long as it has an Intel 1st generation or newer processor, or an equivalent AMD processor made from 2011 or later.

If your notebook came with a SSD, most likely it is a M.2 2280 SATA SSD.

If you go to the device manager, click to expand the disk drives device manager category, you can copy and paste the model number of the SSD your notebook came with and then I should be able to confirm what type it is.

Thank you for your help. The model number is SAMSUNG MZNTY-128HDHP-00H1.

With windows 10 loosing support this coming October I have been advised to not bother replacing the SSD and to purchase a new laptop instead. As I previously said I have a back up laptop but this also only has windows 10 on and with us only having this laptop for for a few years i'm a bit put out that we will need to upgrade regardless thanks to windows but I guess it is what is it 😞 I have checked to see if we can get windows 11 but it seems not.

Thank you for your help 🙂
