I have started getting Hard Disk Error message before the computer starts. I think I need to replace my hard drive, but it seems like there is brand new versions of Samsung ST500LM012 avaialble. Can I trust a used/recondition driver? Who would you recommend to purchase from?

Why you have to trust an old HDD? HDD's use mechanical/moving parts. I don't trust ANY used/recondition drive. You can use nearly all standard 2.5" HDD's on market today, only one thing you need to check out: thickness, your machine use 9.5mm HDD's.
And you can buy from any good computer store
Regards.

There should be SSDs or HDDs that have the same interface. I still recommend getting an SSD, as for a 1TB SSD, they are around $100 to $200 at average for a new one on Amazon. I also recommend getting an optical drive caddy for HDDs. You can put your SSD in it and then you should be able to transfer your files between them. However, you will need to remove your optical drive, which will be easy. And the caddys are around $10 on Amazon. Video link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?vl=en&v=CMNwY0OWj2I
Also, I think that the laptop will be more stable with two storage drives being used at the same time. Perhaps you can have Windows downloaded on both storage drives, and one of them is set as the primary one. With that, if one of them fails, the other one will probably compensate for that. 👍 However, if you use your DVD writer a lot, you can simply switch back.
