Hi @annacolegrove,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP laptop is encountering an issue where it prompts you to update before you can download or install new software, but it’s not finding any available updates when you check. This could be due to several reasons, including issues with Windows Update, system glitches, or problems with the update settings.
Here’s a detailed guide to help you resolve the issue:
**1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.Go to Update & Security.
- Click on Troubleshoot in the left pane.Click on Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update and click Run the troubleshooter.Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and fix problems with Windows Update.
**2. Check for Updates Manually
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.Click Check for updates to ensure you’re not missing any available updates. If updates are available, follow the prompts to download and install them.
**3. Restart Windows Update Services
Sometimes, restarting Windows Update services can resolve update issues.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:
- Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
- Delete all files in this folder.Return to Command Prompt and type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:
- Go back to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
**4. Reset Windows Update Components
- Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).Copy and paste the following commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
**5. Check for Driver Updates
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
- Look for any devices with a yellow triangle indicating a problem.Right-click on such devices and select Update driver.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
